Dr. Ben shahar

Natural Products

Dr. Ben Shahar is a researcher at the Shamir Research Institute in the Golan Heights, specializing in applied microbiology of algae and fungi. His work focuses on developing sustainable biological processes for the cultivation, extraction, and utilization of microorganisms for various applications, including protein production and bioactive compounds. By integrating circular economy principles and waste utilization, his research addresses both environmental challenges and the efficient use of resources.

Dr. Shahar’s research is rooted in the Golan and Galilee regions, which are distinguished by their diverse climates, rich biodiversity, and agricultural variety. These unique characteristics provide a valuable foundation for his work, which holds broad potential. The insights gained from this ecologically complex region, with its wide range of crops and by-products, can offer valuable solutions to global sustainability challenges. In collaboration with researchers and entrepreneurs, Dr. Shahar works to translate scientific discoveries into practical solutions that tackle both environmental and economic issues, aiming to create sustainable, locally relevant innovations with a far-reaching global impact.

Research Interests

Research Interests: My research focuses on the isolation, identification, and application of natural substances from various sources: microorganisms, plants, and agricultural waste. In our laboratory, we perform extractions and separations of substances from natural sources while examining the biological activity of the extracts for various purposes such as the development of pesticides, food additives, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. We aim to cover all stages of the research - screening of extracts while examining their composition and/or biological activity, separation and identification of the most active components, with the ultimate goal of applying the active components in the field and industry.
